Outreach and Engagement
is defined as a meaningful and mutually
beneficial collaboration with partners in
education, business, public, and social services.
It represents—
- That aspect of teaching that enables learning beyond the campus walls
- That aspect of research that makes what we discover useful beyond the academic community
- That aspect of service that directly benefits the public
Each Winter Quarter approximately $400,000 in grants is made available to Ohio State faculty and staff to support their outreach and engagement work. Apply for some of these dollars to expand your research, teaching, and service.

Office of University Outreach and Engagement Excellence in Engagement Grants
Support an interdisciplinary team to build upon their academic/research excellence and to establish an innovative, creative, scholarly outreach and engagement initiative that contributes to the University’s efforts to understand and address the pressing needs of communities and gives the team, college/regional campus, and university recognition both regionally and nationally for its partnership with the community. Up to $100,000 each.

Service-Learning Initiative Grants
Course development and course enhancement grants are typically awarded in amounts up to:
- $3,000 for the development of service-learning courses that incorporate projects addressing community goals in areas such as health, community safety, youth, housing, or education. Projects will build student civic responsibility, enhance student learning through community engagement, and build the capacity of community partners.
- $300 for course enhancement to fund efforts that result in lasting change and improvement of an existing service-learning course.

Fund outreach and engagement initiatives with partners from at least two colleges/departments (one being OSU Extension). $10,000-$25,000 each.

Office of Continuing Education Course Development Grants
Support faculty in adapting credit and noncredit courses delivered using nontraditional teaching and learning formats that target an expanded learner base. Noncredit courses must show potential to become credit courses in the future. Up to $15,000 a year for up to 3 years. These grants will not be available in 2008-2009.
